About Deputy Brandon Coates Community Skatepark

Deputy Brandon Coates Community Skatepark is a free public, outdoor concrete skate spot at the top of Deputy Brandon Coates Community Park, 3815 Substation Rd in south Orlando near Hunter's Creek, just off Orange Blossom Trail and the SR 417. The 27.2-acre Orange County park opened on July 30, 2016 and honors Orange County Sheriff's Deputy First Class Brandon Lee Coates, who was killed in the line of duty in 2010. The skatepark is open to all four riding styles - skateboards, BMX, scooters and inline skates - and runs on standard county park hours: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in summer and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in winter. It's unsupervised, so riders session at their own pace and risk. The concrete layout pairs an open bowl with a street area where rails and down rails are the main draw, making it a good stop for grind-focused sessions and transition practice alike. The setting is part of what makes it memorable: Tallahassee sculptor Ira Hill created a 30-foot skateboard-shaped shade structure over the plaza along with three-dimensional graffiti-style benches, giving the spot real character and some welcome shade. The rest of the park backs it up with paved parking, restrooms, a playground, picnic pavilions with grills, two multipurpose fields and walking trails, so there's plenty for the whole crew between sessions.
