About West Side Pump Track
West Side Pump Track is a free public, outdoor asphalt pump track at 100 Western Drive in Santa Cruz, California, sitting at the corner of Western Drive and Mission Street (Highway 1) on the city's west side. It is operated by the City of Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation Department and is open from sunrise to sunset, weather permitting. The 6,250-square-foot track first opened in November 2013 as a community-driven project, with local supporters including Another Bike Shop and property owner William Ow helping bring it to life. In 2021 the Santa Cruz Mountains Trail Stewardship (SCMTS) completely redesigned and rebuilt the track, adding 28 new obstacles - rollers, banked turns, and jumps - and choosing a paved surface because it lasts longer and is easier to maintain. SCMTS crews, including their Summer Youth Trail Crew, continue to help maintain the site, which was also landscaped with native, drought-resistant plants. The winding asphalt circuit is compact and beginner-friendly, making it ideal for kids, though riders of all ages and abilities are welcome; the layout even incorporates a smaller loop for the littlest riders. The smooth pavement rides well for bikes as well as scooters and skateboards, and the loop format rewards pumping through rollers and railing the berms rather than pedaling. On-site amenities are simple: a picnic table and a portable restroom, with street parking nearby. Dogs are not allowed on the track. With the ocean a few blocks away and Wilder Ranch trails just up the coast, the West Side Pump Track is a handy warm-up spot or a fun standalone session for west side families.
