About Oakland Pump Track
Oakland Pump Track is a free, volunteer-built dirt pump track tucked into Joaquin Miller Park in the Oakland hills, reached off Sanborn Drive inside the park. It is the East Bay's grassroots bike-skills spot, sitting on city-owned parkland surrounded by the park's redwood trails. The track grew out of a mid-ride conversation among local mountain bikers and took about four years of planning, permitting, and fundraising to become real. Spearheaded by Ryan Gardner, Kevin Smallman, and a small team of dedicated Oakland riders under the Bicycle Trails Council of the East Bay, with support from City of Oakland staff, it was built with hundreds of hours of volunteer labor, more than $16,000 in community donations, and equipment donated by Silverado Contractors and Herc Rentals. It officially opened in fall 2020. The track is free and open to all, from first-time riders to experienced ones, and is designed for bikes. Its compacted-dirt rollers and berms let riders generate speed by pumping rather than pedaling, building balance and bike-handling skills lap after lap. Posted rules keep things simple: a maximum of four riders on the track at a time, no riding on top of the berms, don't modify the track, and absolutely no riding when the dirt is wet, which damages the surface. Amenities at the track itself are minimal, with no restrooms or dedicated lot; riders typically park on the nearby road shoulder. The wider Joaquin Miller Park offers picnic areas, restrooms, and an extensive trail network. The track is community-maintained, and volunteers are always welcome.
