About Newburg Park Pump Track
The Newburg Park Pump Track, also known locally as the Fortuna Bike Park, is a free public pump track at Newburg Park (the Dennis Wendt Sports Complex), 2700 Newburg Road in Fortuna, California, in Humboldt County. It sits within an 18.5-acre community sports park that the city has operated since purchasing the pastureland in 1979. The bike park began as a dirt facility and was renovated and paved in 2020 through a community effort, with the City of Fortuna crediting volunteers and donors including the Redwood Coast Mountain Biking Association, Wahlund Construction, Mercer-Fraser, Sunbelt Rentals, and Humboldt Redwood Company. A ribbon-cutting for the newly paved track was held on October 29, 2020. The renovation expanded the riding options to suit all skill levels and ages, and because the track is now asphalt rather than dirt, it can be ridden year-round - a real advantage in Humboldt County's wet climate. The layout is primarily a pump track of rollers and banked turns where riders build speed by pumping rather than pedaling, and the park is also described by the city as a bicycle skills course. Access is free and unsupervised, with the park open until dusk. The track is geared toward bikes, from balance bikes and BMX to mountain bikes. Newburg Park surrounds the track with plenty of family amenities: public restrooms, a playground, a picnic area, permanent cornhole sets, an all-weather walking path, and a large complex of baseball, softball, and soccer fields. Dogs must be leashed and glass containers are prohibited in the park.
