About The House
The House is a paid, skater-owned indoor skatepark on Bardwell Road, in the Neepsend and Kelham Island area of Sheffield. It opened its doors on 7 May 1998 and is the UK's oldest skater-owned skatepark by a long way. It was originally built largely from MDF and funded with a loan from the Prince's Youth Business Trust, and it has been remodelled many times since to keep up with the community it serves. That long history has made it a genuine local institution. The park fills an airy 10,500-square-foot warehouse with a wooden floor and wooden ramps, plus the only indoor concrete bowl in the north of England. Its features include a 16-foot mini ramp with a moveable extension linked to an inverted hip and wall ride, a towering vert wall, a kinked box, and a street course with flat banks, quarter pipes, rails, and a long box. It's a mini-wheel-only park, so skateboards, inline and quad skates, and scooters are all welcome, but no bikes are allowed, not even BMX. The layout is arranged for fluid movement, with something from friendly to fiendish for every level. The House is famous for its long-running annual competition and regularly hosts national tours, video premieres, and demos, with the James Boxhall memorial bar on site. It also has a fully stocked skate shop and coaching through the Skateboard School, and it runs a range of inclusive community sessions.
