About Stockwell (Brixton Beach)
Stockwell Skatepark, known everywhere as Brixton Beach, is a free, outdoor concrete skatepark on the corner of Stockwell Park Walk and Stockwell Road in Lambeth, South London. It's one of the oldest skateparks in the UK and the world, a short push from Brixton Academy. It was funded by Lambeth Borough Council and built in 1978 by Lorne Edwards, the "grandfather of British skateboarding," on the former site of Brixton Tabernacle Baptist Church. Its original sandy-coloured sugar bowl, big bowl, and snake run gave it a beach-like feel and its famous nickname. In 1995 it was painted red and gained a sausage ramp and a mound with stairs, cementing its 90s and 2000s heyday. It has been resurfaced several times over the decades as the concrete cracked and wore. In 2022 it received a major ยฃ500,000 refurbishment by Lambeth Council, the Friends of Stockwell Skatepark, and Betongpark, funded partly by ยฃ100,000 from Network Homes and the London Marathon Charitable Trust. The work refreshed the surface, improved the flow, added a quarter-pipe along the northern wall, and brought back the homage red concrete, with plaques for Lorne Edwards and BMX patron Charlie Reynolds. It's a flowing, graffiti-laden park built for speed and creativity, with a big bowl, snake run, half-bowl, hips, banks, and a box. More than a skatepark, it's a beloved egalitarian community hub for skaters, BMXers, bladers, musicians, and locals, subject of the documentary Long Live Stockwell, and it's free and open at all hours.
