About Spit & Sawdust
Spit & Sawdust is a paid, artist-led indoor skatepark, cafรฉ, and art space on the east side of Cardiff, just off Newport Road at Unit B, Rhymney River Bridge Road. It opened in April 2014 and combines skating, art, and food under one roof. It was founded by skater Christian "Pirate Man" Hart and his partner Nia Metcalfe, an artist and curator, who wanted to bring their crafts together in a single place. They built the 11,000-square-foot wooden skatepark from scratch in about two months using new materials. The high-ceilinged old depot gives the space a luminous feel, with industrial lights over the ramps and quirky touches like a white wood-and-wire tree floating above the park and a giant wooden root arching over the stairs. It's a small but perfectly formed street park with banks, ledges, rails, funboxes, a mini ramp, quarter pipes, gaps, and a vert. It's widely rated as one of the best indoor parks in Wales, and one of the friendliest and tastiest thanks to its cafรฉ, which serves organic, homemade food with a pizza oven out in the yard. Many people come just for the food. The space is community-focused and inclusive, being step-free, dog-friendly, and home to an art programme, exhibitions, artist studios, and a shop. It welcomes skateboarders, scooter riders, and roller skaters of all ages, with booking essential for indoor sessions, plus parking, bike racks, and an accessible toilet on site.
