About Rom Skatepark
Rom Skatepark, known as The Rom, is a historic outdoor concrete skatepark on Upper Rainham Road in Hornchurch, East London, named after the adjacent River Rom. Built and opened in August 1978, it was designed by Adrian Rolt of G-Force using seamless shotcrete and modelled on Californian skateparks. It's considered the complete collectors' edition of G-Force's work, keeping original features like a field of concrete moguls, a half-pipe, a kidney-shaped pool, bowls, and a snake run. John Greenwood ran the park from 1978 right through until 2018. In September 2014 it became the first skatepark in Europe, and only the second in the world, to earn Grade II listed status. Since Tampa's Bro Bowl was later demolished and rebuilt, Rom is now the only heritage-listed full-size skatepark left in existence. A devastating fire in July 2018 destroyed the wooden outbuildings and indoor facilities, though the main concrete park survived. Rising insurance costs and falling attendance then led the owners to cease operations in September 2019. Since then, a volunteer-run not-for-profit has revived it, reopening at weekends for skateboarding, BMX, and scooters, and hosting parties and events. It remains on Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register, and it is a genuine landmark of British skate culture, celebrated in the film "Rom Boys: 40 Years of Rad."
