About Radlands Plaza
Radlands Plaza is a free, outdoor all-concrete street plaza in Midsummer Meadow recreation ground on Bedford Road, Northampton, run by the council. It takes its name from the original Radlands, a legendary indoor skatepark built in a Northampton warehouse by the Ince family in 1992. Radlands Plaza was built by Team Pain. That original park was the first ever indoor skatepark in Britain, drawing British and American pros before it closed in 2004. After years of campaigning by the Northampton Skatepark Action Group, including original Radlands figures and designer Rob Selley, a replacement was finally secured. The plaza, funded by Northampton Borough Council, was designed and built by Wheelscape and opened on 21 July 2012. Over 800 people turned up to skate it on opening day, and the project drew support from Tony Hawk. It's a plaza-style park with Wheelscape's signature smooth concrete, red features, and a diamond design, laid out as three flowing lines that link together. Those runs pack in hipped banks, curved up-and-downs, long ledges, wide manual pads, hubbas, rails, stair sets, kickers, a gap, and a small mini-ramp section. Widely rated as one of the best street skate spots in the UK, it suits beginners learning the basics and advanced skaters fine-tuning tricks. It welcomes skateboarders, BMX riders, scooter riders, and rollerbladers, is floodlit until 9:30pm, and has an on-site car park, bike racks, benches, and toilets at the nearby Illicit Cafรฉ.
