About Projekts MCR

Projekts MCR is a paid, community-run not-for-profit skatepark set beneath the dramatic arch of the Mancunian Way flyover, on the edge of Manchester city centre near Piccadilly. It's one of the UK's largest managed, community-led skateparks. Its roots go back to 2001, when skateboarding was banned in the city's public spaces and a group of skaters led by John Haines fundraised and worked with Manchester City Council to take over the underused land under the flyover. The current concrete park was built by Freestyle and opened in 2012. The 1,400-square-metre park blends street, transition, and flat-ground terrain, mostly concrete with some wooden ramps. It serves deprived communities across eight nearby council estates, drawing more than 6,000 users and around 20,000 visits a year, and it runs one of the UK's largest school skateboarding programmes. Open sessions are paid on the door, with coaching, private lessons, and holiday clubs also on offer. A community crowdfunding campaign raised £134,338 to expand the park and add energy-saving LED floodlights, backed by further support from the National Lottery, Sport England, and the Veolia Environmental Trust. Beyond the ramps, it has an independent café at the heart of the community, a hireable upstairs event space with a balcony viewing platform, and full wheelchair access throughout. Its mural-painted columns and the shoes strung from the flyover above make it one of the most distinctive skate settings in the UK.
