About Playing Place
Playing Place Skatepark is a free, outdoor concrete park tucked in the woods behind the village hall at Playing Place, just south of Truro in Cornwall. It's one of the few UK skateparks still surviving from the 1970s. Built in 1977, it's a genuine piece of skate history from the era when skateboarding first arrived in Britain. A concrete extension in the 1980s bowled out one side to add a quarter pipe. The main bowl is large, open, and very mellow, with no coping and gentle transitions you can pump around endlessly. Some of the hips are so subtle that regulars find new ones after years of skating it. A taller, tighter speed bowl at one end adds a bit more pace to the layout. The rough old surface and mellow edges make it more of a heritage curio than a modern transition park. It has survived partly because protected tree roots run beneath the concrete, so it can't be demolished. The wooded setting means it often fills with fallen leaves, so it's best skated after a dry spell.
