About Hackney Bumps
Hackney Bumps is a free, outdoor concrete skatepark in Daubeney Fields in Clapton, east London, between Chatsworth Road and the River Lea near Hackney Marshes. It's one of London's oldest skateparks, built in 1986 as one of the last public amenities created by the Greater London Council before its dissolution, reportedly at a cost of around ยฃ250,000. Its defining feature is its field of undulating concrete bumps and mounds, unusual among skateparks, that reward flow, speed, and creativity over standard ramps. For decades it was never invested in or even cleaned, and the surface became rough, cracked, and barely skateable, littered with junk and clogged drains that left it under puddles. In early 2019 a group of local skaters formed the Hackney Bumps Community Group and set about regenerating it. They painstakingly hand-polished the concrete a few square metres at a time, including through the COVID lockdowns, sealed it, and repaired cracks over thousands of volunteer hours. They also added sympathetically-designed new concrete elements, including 6-foot and 3-foot quarter pipes, a flat-bank hip to a wall ride, a ledge, a flat rail, and slappy curbs. This was funded through crowdfunding and later a partnership with Vans. The revived park reopened to great acclaim around 2021 and has featured in Thrasher and the Nine Club, sparking a surge in local skateboarding with free lessons and a strong family atmosphere. It welcomes skateboarders, BMX riders, scooter riders, and rollerbladers of all ages, open 24/7 and free.
