About Dean Lane (The Deaner)
Dean Lane, known everywhere as The Deaner, is a free, outdoor concrete skatepark in Dame Emily Park in Bedminster, south Bristol, next to Bristol South Swimming Pool. Built by Bristol City Council in spring 1978 during the skateboarding boom, it's one of the oldest skateparks in the UK. The site was once a coal mine, where a 1908 accident killed eight people and led to its closure. The Smyth family, who owned the land, donated it to the council for the community, and decades later it became this beloved skate spot. Its crusty DIY transitions are built into a hill, so going fast is mandatory rather than optional. The cracks and imperfections make it far tougher to skate than modern parks, which is central to its fearsome reputation: "Nothing meaner than the Deaner." The layout wraps around two sides of the park's football pitches, with tall hipped flat banks, curved banks, bowled corners, a big pump bump, a mini ramp, quarter pipes, and a fun box, plus an open bowl added in a 2010 facelift. In 2021 a smooth new concrete "Slab" section was added next door, community-funded by the Bristol Skatepark Collective and built by Canvas. It's more than a skatepark: an ever-changing graffiti canvas and a hotbed of Bristol culture that draws pro skaters from around the world, hosts the annual Dean Lane Hardcore Funday, and was the subject of the acclaimed documentary Nothing Meaner. It welcomes skateboarders, BMX riders, scooter riders, and rollerbladers, free and open at all hours.
