About Crystal Palace Skatepark
Crystal Palace Skatepark is a free, outdoor concrete skatepark in Crystal Palace Park, off Thicket Road in south-east London. It marks skateboarding's return to one of its historic homes, where the first major UK national skateboarding competition took place in 1977, right next to the site of the world-famous 1980s half-pipe. It grew out of a petition raised by local skaters around 2014 and was designed through a collaboration between skatepark firm Canvas, Kinnear Landscape Architects, and local riders. Funded by the Mayor of London at a reported cost of around ยฃ350,000, it was built by Canvas and opened in March 2018. The 1,100-square-metre park is an extended 100-metre-long, 11-metre-wide curved concrete band with three sections in descending depth. At one end sits an advanced cloverleaf pool with swimming-pool-style stone coping and tiling, 8.5 feet deep, billed as the first skateboarding pool built in London for 40 years. In the middle is an L-shaped steel-coping bowl with a multitude of hips and curves, suited to skilled transition riders. At the other end is a large mellow section with flat and transitioned banks, an angled hip, a banked ledge, a pump bump, and a 5-foot taco for all abilities. It welcomes skateboarders, BMX riders, scooter riders, rollerbladers, and quad skaters of all ages. The park sits in a distinctive raised tray-like platform ringed by landscaped grass mounds for viewing, is maintained by the Friends of Crystal Palace Skatepark, and is free and open during daylight hours, a short walk from Crystal Palace station.
