About Bournbrook DIY
Bournbrook DIY is a free, outdoor concrete skatepark on Bournbrook recreation ground in Selly Oak, Birmingham, just down the road from the train station. It's managed by the Birmingham Skate Spaces community group. The park began during the first COVID lockdown in summer 2020, when local skater Shaun Boyle and friends started clearing an abandoned, overgrown concrete space. Volunteers from the skate and resident community gradually built it out using reclaimed materials. In 2021 it became the first DIY skatepark in the UK to be granted official skatepark status, having been built to the relevant British Standards. It was certified in the same year skateboarding debuted at the Olympics. The layout features flat banks, ledges, quarters, a pyramid box, and open flat ground. It suits everyone from complete beginners to skaters with decades of experience, and free coaching sessions run on site. Graffiti murals wrap the surrounding walls, and a community garden sits right beside the park. Skaters often leave old decks here for anyone to take and use.
