About The Yard Skatepark
The Yard Skatepark is a non-profit community skatepark in Polhena, Matara, on Sri Lanka's southern coast. Founded by Raphael Amsler and a collective of Sri Lankan and foreign residents, the park opened on April 1, 2023 after three years of negotiations with local authorities and landowners, with a Polhena resident ultimately offering part of his yard on a 10-year rental agreement. Phase 1 was funded through GoFundMe and local crowdfunding campaigns, using 40 cubic meters of C35 concrete to build a transition-focused park with a bowl, mini ramp, quarter pipes, banks, and street obstacles. The park's mission addresses youth unemployment, substance abuse, and limited recreational options in the area, providing year-round activity for local youth who often cannot afford surfing equipment or lack swimming skills. Built with a "by the people, for the people" ethos, The Yard welcomes skateboarders, BMX riders, and longboarders to session its concrete transitions and hips in a laid-back south coast setting.
