About Midigama Skatepark
Midigama Skatepark is the first skatepark ever built in Sri Lanka, founded in 2012 by four friends - surfers and skateboarders who met in Belgium: Rutger Embrechts, Arno Van Elsen, and Brazilian brothers Henrique and Bernardo Figueiredo. During a surf holiday with nothing to do on flat days, they built a small concrete bowl using 150 bags of concrete on land belonging to a local family in the fishing village of Midigama, about five minutes from Weligama. The park has since grown to include a ledge, manual pad, pyramid, and quarter pipe that can be skated like a spine into the bowl, all set amongst palm trees in a tropical setting. A roof was added to protect from monsoon rains and enable year-round skating. The park is entirely donation-based, providing free skateboards to tourists and locals alike since no commercial skate shop exists in Sri Lanka. Approximately 20 regular local skaters use the park daily, with riders also coming from Weligama, Galle, and Colombo. Midigama Skatepark laid the foundation for Sri Lanka's growing south coast skate scene, inspiring every park that followed.
