About Piazza della Visitazione
Matera's skatepark sits in the city whose ancient Sassi - cave dwellings carved into the limestone ravine - went from being dubbed 'the shame of Italy' to a UNESCO World Heritage Site and 2019 European Capital of Culture. The concrete park features ledges, banks, manual pads, quarter pipes, and flat bars. The Sassi are extraordinary - thousands of cave dwellings, churches, and frescoed rock chapels honeycomb the ravine walls, creating a cityscape that looks biblical (Mel Gibson filmed The Passion of the Christ here). The park draws riders from the Basilicata area. The food is southern Italian simplicity at its best - cruschi peppers (fried dried sweet peppers), cavatelli pasta, and bread from Matera's famous wood-fired ovens. Skating in view of one of the world's most extraordinary urban landscapes is a genuinely unique experience.
