About L'Aquila Skatepark
L'Aquila's 2018 skatepark represents the resilience of this Abruzzo mountain capital, which was devastated by the 2009 earthquake that killed 309 people and destroyed much of the historic center. The concrete park features ledges, banks, manual pads, quarter pipes, and flat bars. Reconstruction continues, but the extraordinary Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio - with its distinctive red-and-white façade - has been magnificently restored. L'Aquila sits at 721 meters elevation surrounded by the Gran Sasso and other Apennine peaks, giving it a mountain-town character unique among Italian regional capitals. The park draws riders from the L'Aquila basin. The food is mountain Abruzzese - arrosticini, scrippelle 'mbusse (crêpes in broth), and saffron from nearby Navelli. Skating here carries a special significance - rebuilding recreational spaces is part of healing a wounded city.
