About Skatepark Alajuelita
Skatepark Alajuelita is widely considered the best skatepark in Costa Rica. Located within the 8-hectare Parque para el Desarrollo Humano de Alajuelita, this three-level terraced concrete park was inaugurated on July 14, 2023, after nine months of construction managed by UNOPS (the United Nations Office for Project Services) and financed by Costa Rica's Ministry of Culture and Youth. The three levels create elevation changes across bowls, ramps, stairs, rails, and whoops (roller-style undulations). The Costa Rican Skateboarding Federation was directly involved in refining the design. Just five weeks after opening, the park hosted the First National Skateboarding Championship on August 21-22, 2023. The project represents almost eight years of effort, with formal construction starting in October 2022. The broader park includes 1.9+ kilometers of pedestrian and bicycle trails, six public squares, three pedestrian bridges, a multi-purpose court, playgrounds with accessible equipment for children with disabilities, and enhanced lighting throughout. The entire complex was built as an international development project explicitly aimed at reducing inequality and violence in one of San Josรฉ's most economically disadvantaged cantons, serving approximately 97,000 residents. Free and open to the public.
