About LUZO Skatepark
LUZO Skatepark is a 1,200 square meter park in San Rafael de Heredia, built in May 2017 as a memorial to Luis "Luzo" Zambado, a youth skateboarding advocate who was shot and killed in April 2016 while protecting kids in his skateboard program from a drug dealer. Luzo and his cousin Ruben Villalobos had co-founded "San Rafael Extremo," a five-year youth organization keeping children away from drugs and gangs through skateboarding. The park was built by approximately 200 volunteers over two days with support from Ryan Sheckler, the Ryan Sheckler Foundation, Red Bull, the Biegler Foundation ($13,000), and American Ramp Company ($30,000 in donated PRO Series ramp equipment). The grand opening was produced by Red Bull with a skateboarding demonstration by Sheckler and local pros. The Berrics, Juice Magazine, and La República all covered the story. The park features quarter pipes, banks, boxes, a pyramid section, ledges, flat and kinked grind rails, a mini quarter, a halfpipe, and Latin America's first modular pump track. The steel ramps use American Ramp Company's MaxGrip coating on a concrete foundation, and a roofed shade structure provides shelter from rain and sun. The park hosts the annual "Open Luzo" competition and continues to run workshops for all ages and skill levels.
